The Emerging Playwrights Lab

- Currently accepting submissions -

Over the course of three months, each playwright will have three cold readings performed by a community of actors. After each reading there will be structured discussion from a rotating board of theatre artists and their fellow lab members. Between each of their cold reads, the playwright will have a one on one meeting with the facilitator to set individual goals for their next reading. The lab will culminate in fifteen minutes of each play being presented at a festival of new works at a Manhattan venue with invited industry guests, friends, and fellow artists.

Amoeba Productions is excited to launch three developmental labs this year. Each seeks to gather early career artists together to workshop ideas, read burgeoning projects aloud, and build a community of supported creation.

Playwright's Lab

Writing can be lonely! The Playwright’s Lab seeks to create community and structure for the burgeoning writers of New York. Whether you are working on a script from before or a brand new baby of an idea, gathering consistently and discussing your work with other writers always lights up a process. The lab will end in a staged reading.

Musical Theatre Lab

The Music Theatre Lab brings together composers, lyricists, and script writers to help build impactful musicals. Musicals will be workshopped and developed alongside peers. Drawing from Amoeba’s community of actors and musicians, the lab will culminate in the new works being showcased in a public or private performance.

Performance Lab

This is a gathering of  artists who want to practice generating their own work. Thinking of actors, musicians, other folks who are often in a position of making other people’s creative work come to fruition but who would like to exercise their own creativity. This will be a rambunctious throwing around of ideas based on prompts that will then be turned into a showcase of bits, bobbles, and short plays.
